Updates regarding the ELI’s contributions to AI governance

Dear ELI Members

As we draw to the close of this year, we are pleased to share two significant updates regarding the ELI’s contributions to AI governance.

  1. ELI Response to the European Commission’s Consultation on AI Guidelines

The ELI Council recently approved a Response to the Commission’s Multi-Stakeholder Consultation for Commission Guidelines on the Application of the Definition of an AI System and the Prohibited AI Practices Established in the AI Act. The Response, submitted on 11 December 2024, is available here. We extend our gratitude to the drafters ELI Scientific Director, Prof Dr Christiane Wendehorst, Research Manager Intelligent Systems and Certification of AI at the Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH), Bernhard Nessler, for their efforts in shaping this significant contribution to AI governance. The expert insights and guidance of the Advisory Committee also significantly enhanced this important contribution.

We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming webinar on the topic on 19 February 2025 from 12:30– 14:00 CET. Register here.

  1. Principles on Co-Generated Data

The Principles on Co-Generated Data, developed in collaboration with the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), the first multi-stakeholder initiative dedicated to the responsible development of AI around the world, represent a significant step forward in advancing data governance frameworks. These Principles are preliminary in nature and intended for use around the world by legislators addressing new copyright or data protection rights in co-generated in- and output. Accompanying the Principles is an in-depth report that explores existing legal frameworks covering the Generative AI lifecycle in the European Union, the United States, and Japan. This initiative represents a collaborative effort lead by authors Prof Dr Alain Strowel and Prof Dr Sebastian Schwamberger, the Cogen Project Group, a wider Data Governance Working Group of GPAI and ELI’s Advisory Committee and Observer. The output is available here. To read more about the Principles, please click here. We are profoundly grateful to all those involved for their invaluable contributions and dedication to this important work.

A webinar will take place on 27 February2025 from 13:00 to 14:30 CET. To register, please click here

Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
